You know, sleeping is something that millions of people have problems with, and yet this issue never really gets any attention. Sure, there is an occasional commercial on TV pushing TylonalPM…but really, you dont wanna take that stuff every night.

There is a lot you should know about these sleep pills. I find that it is incredibly rare to see anyone pushing natural methods for insomnia relief. I dont know why, because there are two incredible natural herbal supplements you can take for a good, sound, NATURAL sleep. The first one is Melatonin.

What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland , a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your sleep and wake cycles. Very small amounts of it are found in foods such as meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. You can also buy it as a supplement.

What does natural melatonin do in the body?
Your body has its own internal clock that controls your natural cycle of sleeping and waking hours. In part, your body clock controls how much melatonin your body makes. Normally, melatonin levels begin to rise in the mid- to late evening, remain high for most of the night, and then drop in the early morning hours.

Light affects how much melatonin your body produces. During the shorter days of the winter months, your body may produce melatonin either earlier or later in the day than usual. This change can lead to symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or winter depression. 1

Natural melatonin levels slowly drop with age. Some older adults make very small amounts of it or none at all.

The second one is Valerian Root. Which is also a great natural supplement for anxiety. This is what Wikipedia has to say about Valerian Root…
“Valerian is used for insomnia and other disorders and can be a useful alternative to benzodiazepine drugs.[6][7][8][9] However most of these research studies have shown it to be ineffective in this use. A recent article states, “Most studies found no significant differences between valerian and placebo either in healthy individuals or in persons with general sleep disturbance or insomnia.” [10] Valerian is used against sleeping disorders, restlessness and anxiety, and as a muscle relaxant. Valerian often seems only to work when taken over longer periods (several weeks), though many users find that it takes effect immediately[citation needed]. Some studies have demonstrated that valerian extracts interact with the GABA and benzodiazepine receptors. Valerian is also used traditionally to treat gastrointestinal pain and irritable bowel syndrome. However, long term safety studies are missing. Valerian is sometimes recommended as a first-line treatment when benefit-risk analysis dictates. Valerian is often indicated as transition medication when discontinuing benzodiazepines.”

I have used Valerian, and I think it is an awesome safe alternative to insomnia AND anxiety.
